Maxcroft Barn, Hilperton

The refurbishment of this barn, situated next to a house aside the Kennet and Avon Canal near Trowbridge, involved large-scale rebuilding. Only the gable end and garden wall remained of the original building at completion in 2008. The barn had been damaged by a 1950s conversion so it was really a question of starting again as far as possible. The roof came off, along with the back wall and much of the internal structure, and a new roof was constructed over a complex steel frame, partially supported on the existing masonry at first floor level and partly supported at ground floor level on new foundations. This was designed to provide enhanced living space inside, including a kitchen extension to the rear, while retaining complete structural integrity. As well as being successful in engineering terms, the solution adds a significant ‘Wow!’ factor to the living accommodation overall.
